São Paulo, Brazil, August 27, 2025 — In response to Brazil’s updated solar safety standards, rapid shutdown functionality is now mandatory for residential, commercial, and industrial rooftop PV systems. At Intersolar South America 2025, Sungrow, a globally leading provider of PV inverters and energy storage systems, launched its dedicated PV rapid shutdown solution for the Brazilian market.
The solution includes the SR20D-M rapid shutdown (RSD) device, the SR200T-BX RSD controller box, and Sungrow inverters. It enhances system safety by reducing module voltage to a safe level within 30 seconds, delivering reliable protection for both people and property.
Under Brazil’s new standard ABNT NBR 17193:2025-02-04, rooftop PV systems must reduce DC voltage below 35V within 30 seconds during grid outages, fires, or other emergencies. This aligns with earlier guidelines from the Brazilian fire authority (NORMA TÉCNICA 44/2023), which highlighted the critical role of rapid shutdown devices in improving emergency response.
In conventional systems, DC voltage decreases slowly after shutdown, often taking several minutes and leaving hundreds of volts active on the roof—posing serious risks to firefighters and service personnel. Sungrow’s solution actively brings the voltage below 35V within half a minute, quickly securing the PV array and significantly reducing potential hazards.
When a solar panel is shaded or faulty, shutdown devices typically enter bypass mode. Conventional designs, however, can see temperatures surge to 180–190°C during this process—far exceeding the operating limits of electronic components and leading to accelerated aging, seal failure, or housing damage.
Sungrow’s solution incorporates patented Fault Heat Control (FHC) low-temperature bypass technology, which limits temperatures to under 120°C—approximately 33% lower than standard products. This greatly extends service life and improves long-term reliability.
To withstand Brazil's diverse climates—from salty coastal regions to humid rainforest conditions—the devices also offer C5-level corrosion resistance and industry-leading ingress protection (IP68 for SR20D-M, IP65 for SR200T-BX), supporting up to 25 years of stable operation.
Sungrow’s rapid shutdown system delivers adaptable performance across residential, commercial, and industrial installations:
- Extended signal range (450 meters): Reduces wiring and additional devices, lowering installation cost and improving stability.
- High current and multi-string support: The SR20D-M supports up to 20A, accommodating various module types. The SR200T-BX can manage 200A and connect up to 30 DC strings, offering design flexibility without extra hardware.
- Faster installation: Compatible with 4–10 mm² PV cables, the snap-fit SR20D-M can be installed within 35 seconds—45% faster than conventional solutions.
As a one-stop solution, Sungrow’s products integrate seamlessly with its inverters under a unified data platform, control logic, and linkage strategy. This simplifies system design, eliminates complex wiring, and reduces commissioning effort.
“Our rapid shutdown solution enhances safety at the module level while simplifying installation and maintenance across the system lifecycle,” said Ada Li, Vice President of Sungrow Americas. “It reinforces Sungrow’s role as a trusted contributor to renewable energy adoption worldwide.”
