BYD’s flash charging network in China is set to expand to 10,000 stations on August 28, reaching the halfway point of its full-year target.
The company said on Weibo that a ceremony marking the completion of the milestone station will be held at 9:00 a.m. Beijing time on Friday at the Longhua flagship flash charging station in Shenzhen.
The achievement reflects BYD’s quickening efforts to build out its own charging infrastructure in support of new models equipped with the second-generation Blade Battery.
As of April 1, BYD had 5,000 flash charging stations operating across China, meaning the network will have doubled in size in less than five months. According to the most recent figures available, the company had completed 7,018 stations by June 30.
To reach its goal of having 20,000 stations in operation by the end of the year, BYD would need to add roughly another 10,000 stations over the next four months or so. That translates into completing about 80 stations per day from August 29 through year-end, which would require an even faster pace of deployment.
The next-generation flash charger BYD introduced in March can deliver up to 1,500 kW through a single connector, and each unit is equipped with two connectors. When combined with the second-generation Blade Battery, the system is capable of charging a vehicle’s battery from 10% to 97% in nine minutes, BYD said at the time.
BYD’s year-end plan calls for 20,000 flash charging stations across China. Of those, 18,000 will be developed in partnership with Chinese charging-network operators, while the remaining 2,000 will be installed along highways. In June, BYD also signed a framework agreement with Sinopec to use the energy giant’s network of more than 30,000 integrated energy service stations to speed up the rollout.
The flash charging stations will be open to electric vehicles from other brands as well, though actual charging speeds will depend on each vehicle’s own capabilities.
BYD also plans to extend its flash charging network to overseas markets by the end of 2026. It has already deployed its first batch of stations in the UK and aims to install 300 there by the end of this year.
