At IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover, Germany, on Sept. 14, 2026, CATL presented TECTRANS II, a next-generation battery platform for commercial vehicles. CATL said the system is intended to support electrification across many types of commercial operations while giving fleet users stronger performance, better economics and longer service life.
According to CATL, TECTRANS II is built around a modular design. Different quantities of standardized packs can be combined, allowing the platform to be tailored to specific energy and payload needs. It works with vehicles using either e-axle or central-drive layouts, and it can be configured for either charging or battery swapping. CATL said this flexibility can shorten OEM vehicle development by 50% and reduce R&D costs by 60% to 70%, because fewer model-specific battery systems are required.
CATL also pointed to lifecycle performance and efficiency gains. The platform has a gravimetric energy density of 170 Wh/kg, which CATL said is about 13% above the industry average. In its maximum configuration, it is designed to deliver up to 1,000 kilometers of range and to reach 80% charge in 25 minutes with megawatt-level fast charging. CATL attributed 96% system round-trip efficiency to a full-tab, low-impedance design. For heavy-duty trucks, the battery is engineered to last 12 years or 1.5 million kilometers while retaining 70% of its capacity.
Safety and reliability measures include reinforced enclosure structures, impact resistance, corrosion protection, high-voltage features designed for easier maintenance, BMS redundancy, insulation fault detection and cybersecurity safeguards. CATL said the platform has undergone validation testing, including full-vehicle torsion tests and external fire tests.
At the event, CATL signed an MoU with DHL Group to develop Green Freight Corridors in Europe. The effort builds on an agreement reached in September 2024 and will pair DHL’s logistics network and operational experience with CATL’s battery technology. The companies said they will work with OEMs and other partners to develop purpose-built electric vehicles and begin pilot deployments.
