Alfen N.V., a prominent European energy solutions provider, and CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited), the world’s largest battery manufacturer, have reached an agreement to roll out 5 gigawatt-hours of sodium-ion battery energy storage systems across Europe. The deal extends the partnership the two companies first established in 2023 with a lithium-ion battery supply arrangement and had already expanded in 2024 to keep pace with Alfen’s growing storage demands.
Under the new agreement, CATL will supply advanced sodium-ion battery systems engineered to deliver superior safety and lifecycle sustainability. These systems are designed to help Europe build a cleaner and more resilient energy infrastructure by introducing lower-cost storage options that broaden the technology mix beyond traditional lithium-ion chemistries.
“Sodium-ion is the next step in how we think about energy storage—more diversified, resilient, and built for where the market is heading. This step with CATL puts us ahead of that curve,” said Michael Colijn, CEO of Alfen. He highlighted that the collaboration will allow Alfen to widen its battery material portfolio, improve its cost structure, and reduce exposure to lithium price fluctuations, strengthening its competitiveness in mid- to large-scale project tenders throughout Europe.
Tan Libin, Chief Customer Officer and Co-President of Sales and Marketing at CATL, added, “We are excited to partner with one of our key strategic partners to accelerate the deployment of next-generation energy storage technologies across Europe. With their superior safety performance and lifecycle sustainability advantages, sodium-ion batteries will deliver unique value to European customers and support the region’s clean-energy goals.”
The initiative also gives CATL an opportunity to build localized expertise in European grid applications, refine its products for regional grid codes, and speed up the global scale-up of sodium-ion energy storage shipments. Together, the two companies will seek new business opportunities that go beyond conventional battery supply, supporting renewable energy integration and fostering cross-border collaboration in the clean-energy space.
