At the Paris auto show, BYD executives outlined a two-stage European rollout for its flash-charging hardware: 100 units by the end of 2026, followed by 3,000 by the end of 2027. The company’s first European flash charger went into service in Germany in June, and installations have since spread to other markets, including the UK.
Each charger is designed to deliver as much as 1,500 kW of DC power through a single connector. BYD says vehicles fitted with its second-generation Blade Battery can move from 10% to 70% state of charge in five minutes, while a 10%-to-97% charge takes nine minutes.
China already hosts 12,165 BYD flash chargers. Globally, the automaker is targeting 20,000 charging stations by the end of 2026. By the end of 2027, its 3,000-unit European target would account for half of the 6,000-station overseas flash-charging network it has planned for that year.
In Europe, the only BYD-built vehicle currently able to use the technology is the Denza Z9 GT station wagon, though BYD expects more compatible models to arrive. The all-electric, seven-seat Atto 8 crossover is scheduled for a European launch in the first quarter of 2027 and is expected to become the first BYD-badged model in the region to support flash charging. It will come standard with a 115 kWh LFP battery and two electric motors whose combined peak output is 570 kW; its WLTP range is quoted at 653 km. BYD said additional flash-charging models will follow the Atto 8 in Europe next year.
