BYD Energy Storage has recently scored another major success in the Middle East. Following the world’s largest grid-side energy storage project of 12.5 GWh in Saudi Arabia, the company has now signed a landmark contract with Masdar, a global clean energy frontrunner, for RTC – the world’s first gigascale, round-the-clock renewable energy project in Abu Dhabi. The single-site project has a capacity of 1,644 MW / 11,275 MWh, deploying 11.275 GWh of BYD Haohan systems.

Situated in Abu Dhabi, RTC is the world’s first gigascale renewable energy project that integrates solar power with battery energy storage. Jointly developed by Masdar and the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), the project pairs a 5.2 GW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant with a 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) – the largest and most technologically advanced system of its kind in the world.

RTC redefines the potential of renewable energy by overcoming the challenge of intermittency. Once operational, the project will, for the first time, generate gigascale baseload power at a globally competitive rate, setting a new international benchmark and reinforcing the UAE’s leadership in renewable energy development. The project will serve as a blueprint that can be replicated worldwide to meet the growing demand for clean, secure, round-the-clock electricity.

Ultra-Powerful Blade Battery

BYD Haohan is equipped with the world’s largest 2,710 Ah Blade Battery for energy storage, boosting single-cell capacity by over 300% and delivering a generational leap in energy density. As a result, the complexity of the battery management system (BMS) is slashed by 70% to 80%, effectively doubling overall system reliability. This ensures the project operates safely and reliably while maximizing its lifecycle value. The technology guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 power supply for the station and builds a solid foundation for the continuous delivery of renewable energy.

Streamlined Station Architecture

BYD Haohan leads the world with a minimal unit capacity of 14.5 MWh. In a standard 20-foot container equivalent, it achieves an ultra-large capacity of 10 MWh. This translates into fewer containers, a smaller footprint, and a more simplified management framework, significantly enhancing integration and redefining the modern energy storage station with ultimate simplicity and safety.

IP66 Extreme-Environment Protection

BYD Haohan supports reliable operation across a wide temperature range from -30°C to 55°C. Engineered for the harsh Middle Eastern desert environment – marked by extreme heat, severe aridity, and intense sandstorms – the system features the world’s highest Ingress Protection rating of IP66. Completely dust-proof, it excels in extreme desert conditions and multiple challenging scenarios, guaranteeing long-term stable and efficient operation.

Central Intelligence for Smart O&M

Notably, the project is equipped with BYD Energy Storage’s self-developed GC Master EMS. The system can access tens of millions of measuring points, offering 25% higher processing capability than the best solutions currently available, and delivers over 400% greater computing power. Its maximum single-station management capacity breaks through 15 GWh. GC Master EMS enables real-time analysis of massive data, precise equipment dispatching, and integrated safety warnings and health diagnostics. Already deployed in multiple overseas 10 GWh-scale projects, it empowers the highly efficient operation of energy storage installations around the globe.
