Recently, CATL signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global mining leader BHP. The partnership will focus on mining equipment electrification, fast-charging infrastructure, energy storage, and battery recycling. By delivering integrated solutions, the two companies aim to accelerate the industry's shift toward electrification and establish scalable green transformation models.
With the rise of renewable energy technologies, market demand for critical minerals such as lithium and nickel continues to grow, driving the expansion of the energy-intensive and high-emission mining sector. As one of the world’s largest mining companies, BHP is committed to leading the industry’s low-carbon transition and has set a goal of achieving net-zero operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The two companies will work together on product development, jointly researching and developing battery solutions suitable for heavy-duty mining equipment and rail locomotives. They will also deploy corresponding fast-charging infrastructure and explore applications for energy storage systems across BHP’s global mining operations. In the future, the partnership will also optimize battery recycling processes to promote a circular economy and establish a more sustainable value chain for the mining industry.
"As a global mining leader, BHP shares CATL's vision for energy transition and net-zero emissions," said Tan Libin, CATL's Chief Customer Officer. "This partnership showcases how advanced battery tech can decarbonize mining operations. We'll keep innovating to drive sustainable transformation in the resources sector."
