Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) has officially opened the Xiamen Energy Storage Validation Research Institute (ESVL), a purpose-built center designed to accelerate the rollout of utility-scale energy storage by providing end-to-end testing and validation under realistic operating conditions. Spread across a 10-hectare site and backed by an investment of roughly 3 billion yuan (around $440 million), ESVL is billed as the world’s largest integrated, one-stop platform for energy storage evaluation.

The rapid growth in energy storage deployments has brought to light a significant gap between laboratory performance and actual field results. CATL reports that close to 20% of large-scale storage plants globally fall short of their expected capacity, while approximately 46.5% experience grid-connection delays of more than two months. Such shortfalls drive up financing costs and make risk assessment more challenging for both investors and insurers.

ESVL tackles these problems by moving beyond component-level testing to full station-level validation. The facility houses five specialized laboratories capable of replicating real grid environments, extreme weather, high-voltage faults, and large-scale fire incidents. At its heart is a station-level grid integration lab equipped with a 100 MVA grid simulator—14 times larger than comparable systems found in other research institutions. This simulator can handle more than ten energy storage containers at once, greatly shortening on-site commissioning time.

A dedicated thermal safety and combustion laboratory provides 100,000 cubic meters of indoor testing space, enabling simultaneous fire testing and blast-resistance evaluations across multiple storage containers. The resulting data helps drive equipment improvements and informs safe spacing guidelines for operational projects.

CATL Chief Scientist Wu Kai underscored the need for rigorous station-level testing and for shifting the validation process to the pre-delivery stage. ESVL functions as an open platform, partnering with global certification bodies such as TÜV SÜD and TÜV Rheinland to offer internationally accepted services. In 2025, CATL led worldwide energy storage battery sales, shipping 121 GWh and capturing more than 30% of the market. By delivering evidence-based validation, the company aims to strengthen confidence in energy storage as a dependable, long-term infrastructure asset.
