On September 22, 2026, CATL moved into trial production at its new battery-cell plant in Debrecen, Hungary, after clearing the necessary preconditions. The first two production lines have begun trial runs, which are designed to install, fine-tune and verify manufacturing equipment and processes ahead of full-scale series output.

The Debrecen project, CATL’s second European battery plant, was unveiled in August 2022. Work on the initial cell building got underway in summer 2023 and reached production-ready status by spring 2026. With an occupancy permit secured in August 2026, the company then obtained the required permits and met the terms of its integrated pollution prevention and control permit.

Prior to that occupancy approval, the Hajdú-Bihar County Government Office had carried out routine inspections at the site, after earlier problems stirred concern among nearby residents. CATL said officials confirmed that every shortcoming flagged during permitting had been dealt with.

Since autumn 2024, the Debrecen site has also turned out battery modules, with 537,000 units produced so far. When fully built out, the plant is set to reach 100 GWh in capacity, making it CATL’s largest manufacturing footprint outside China. It is expected to serve European carmakers that already have EV production capacity in Hungary.

CATL stated that worker health, on-the-job safety and environmental performance will be tracked during trial production. The company intends to hand the monitoring results to the relevant authority on its own initiative and to keep working with government agencies as the plant increases output.
