Ganfeng Lithium Launches Production of 650 Wh/kg Solid-Liquid Hybrid Batteries

Ganfeng Lithium has begun mass-producing its latest solid-liquid hybrid batteries, which deliver an energy density of 650 Wh/kg thanks to the use of a custom-formulated lithium alloy. The Chinese firm—already a longtime supplier to automakers like Changan and Hyundai—says it has also moved into the sample production stage for all-solid-state battery packs that incorporate similar lithium alloy anode technology.

Founded in 2000 as a lithium salt and battery materials producer, Ganfeng expanded into the passenger EV battery space in 2017. In 2023, it signed an MOU with Changan Automobile, followed by a similar agreement with Hyundai in 2024—signaling strong demand for next-generation, high-performance battery solutions.

The newly commercialized solid-liquid hybrid cell leverages advanced cathode and anode materials, anchored by a lithium metal anode engineered for low electrochemical potential and high capacity. By incorporating a multi-element lithium alloy, the company has managed to tackle persistent industry pain points like dendrite formation and limited cycle life. The alloy structure ensures stable electrode–electrolyte contact, suppresses lithium dendrite growth, and boosts safety.

Key performance metrics include a critical current density of 50 mA/cm² and an areal capacity of 1 mAh/cm², enabling 3C fast charging. The “zero-strain” lithium alloy anode—when paired with a sulfur cathode—undergoes only 3–5% volume expansion during cycling. Safety tests show the cells withstand nail penetration and thermal exposure up to 250 °C, with total exothermic heat more than 90% lower than that of pure lithium systems.

For now, these solid-liquid hybrid batteries are being deployed outside the automotive sector. But Ganfeng sees them as a crucial stepping stone toward its all-solid-state roadmap. The company has already advanced to pilot production of solid-state cells using the same lithium alloy anode technology—and aims to bring these higher-energy, safer batteries to future-generation EVs.
