
Navarra, Spain, July 28th —HiTHIUM, a leading energy storage technology company, has entered into an agreement to supply containerized battery energy storage systems (BESS) and long-term technical support to Statkraft, one of Europe’s largest renewable energy producers. HiTHIUM is delivering six ∞Block BESS units, each with a capacity of 5.016 MWh, along with the PCS sourced from a premier Spanish manufacturer, offering a turnkey solution engineered for high-density energy storage and grid-scale dependability. The deployment will provide a total storage capacity of 30.1 MWh at Statkraft’s Montes de Cierzo Wind Farm in northern Spain. The battery systems will enable Statkraft to smooth output, deliver ancillary services such as frequency regulation, and perform peak shaving and valley filling — all contributing to a higher utilization rate for the wind power generated on site.

HiTHIUM’s ∞Block 5.016 MWh BESS units feature liquid cooling, which promotes more uniform thermal management and helps the system deliver stable performance. This is particularly important given the site’s summer temperatures, which can reach 40°C or higher, and winter lows that drop to freezing. The tighter temperature regulation extends battery lifespan and enables a more compact container layout. The ∞Block units also incorporate the manufacturer’s prismatic 314 Ah LFP cells, known for their exceptionally high cycle life. Developed, tested and manufactured at HiTHIUM’s smart production facilities, the systems benefit from rigorous quality control processes that further assure their reliability and long-term endurance.
Located in Tudela, Navarra, and originally built in 2000 to generate power for more than 41,000 homes, the wind farm is currently undergoing repowering. The first phase, completed in spring 2026, replaced 44 old turbines with ten new ones, while the second phase will add battery energy storage and substitute the remaining 41 turbines with four modern units. During the decommissioning work in phase one, Statkraft was able to reuse or recycle nearly all materials, including close to 2,000 tonnes of steel, as well as aluminium, copper, fibreglass and a wide range of other components. Despite the sharp reduction in the number of wind turbines, Statkraft will increase Montes de Cierzo’s total energy capacity from 60 MW to 90 MW, with annual electricity generation expected to double to around 300 GWh.
