EU Allocates €852 Million to Support Key Battery Projects, Including LG's Initiative
According to recent market reports, the European Commission has announced funding of €852 million (approximately RMB 7.163 billion) to support six major electric vehicle (EV) battery projects. This initiative is part of the EU's broader strategy to transition toward a cleaner, more competitive, and resilient industrial base.
The funding will be distributed among the following projects:
● ACC’s battery manufacturing facility in France
● Verkor’s battery production plant in France
● Cellforce’s expansion of high-performance battery manufacturing in Germany
● NOVO Energy’s gigafactory in Sweden
● Leclanché’s 2GWh annual capacity super battery plant in Germany
● LG Energy Solution’s 46-series large cylindrical battery project in Poland
The European Union anticipates that these projects will be operational by 2030. Once fully completed, they are expected to collectively achieve an annual production capacity of approximately 56GWh of power batteries.
LG Energy Solution Expands Production Capabilities in Poland
Currently, LG Energy Solution’s Polish facility exclusively manufactures pouch-type batteries for electric vehicles. To address growing demand in the European market, the company has now entered the initial phase of developing a dedicated production line for 46-series large cylindrical batteries. LG is actively engaging with industry partners to finalize construction plans and will soon begin procuring necessary components and manufacturing equipment.
In addition to its Polish operations, LG Energy Solution already operates a 46-series battery production line at its Ochang facility in Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea. Furthermore, the company is constructing a new cylindrical battery plant in Arizona, USA, reinforcing its global production network.
Growing Market Demand for Large Cylindrical Batteries
The 46-series large cylindrical batteries are gaining significant traction among leading automakers in Europe, North America, and other key markets. Their advantages include:
● High-rate performance
● Superior energy density
● Extended cycle life
● Enhanced safety features
● Efficient manufacturing processes
● Compatibility with diverse battery materials
Chinese Battery Makers Also Driving Industry Growth
Beyond South Korean manufacturers, Chinese battery companies are playing a pivotal role in advancing large cylindrical battery technology. Major players such as CATL, EVE Energy, BAK Power, Yunshan Power, and Ruien New Energy have either commenced mass production or made substantial investments in this sector. Their efforts are expected to accelerate the widespread adoption of large cylindrical batteries across global markets, including EV power systems, energy storage solutions, and specialized applications.
Upcoming Industry Event: CBIS2025 in Shanghai
In November 2025, the China Industrial Association of Power Sources (CIAPS), in partnership with Battery China, will host the 10th International Conference on Power Battery Applications (CBIS2025) in Shanghai.
A key highlight of the event will be the "Large Cylindrical Battery Technology and Diversified Applications" forum. Industry experts and technical leaders from top-tier companies will:
● Analyze critical technical challenges
● Discuss innovative manufacturing processes
● Share best practices for improving production yields
● Explore strategies to overcome barriers to large-scale commercialization
This conference will serve as a vital platform for stakeholders to exchange insights and drive the future development of large cylindrical battery technology.
