LG Energy Solution Vertech has signed a two-year contract with DTE Energy to deliver battery energy storage systems in Michigan, backing eight projects that will provide 1.5 gigawatts of storage capacity, equal to 6 gigawatt-hours of energy. The systems will capture excess power and release it when demand peaks, strengthening grid reliability and reducing the need to cycle generation assets.
LG Energy Solution Vertech will source battery cells from its Michigan plants as well as other sites in the U.S. and Canada, underscoring a commitment to local manufacturing and supply chain integration. Jaehong Park, president of LG Energy Solution Vertech, said the partnership will deliver Michigan-made energy storage to communities while generating advanced roles that support national energy objectives. DTE Energy will host the installations across its service territory, aligning with state standards and supplying critical infrastructure for data center customers. Joi Harris, president and chief executive officer of DTE Energy, noted that the collaboration will keep Michigan competitive in clean energy technology, create well-paid jobs, and improve both reliability and sustainability.
As part of its energy strategy, DTE has identified resources to serve new customers, including data centers, without compromising service for existing customers, and plans to meet Michigan’s Renewable Portfolio Standard and Clean Energy Standard. Battery storage projects backed by an approved contract for a major data center in Saline Township are expected to satisfy DTE’s battery storage obligations under the state’s 2030 clean energy mandate. The agreement between LG Energy Solution Vertech and DTE Energy marks a major step toward enhancing the resilience, sustainability, and economic vitality of Michigan’s electric grid.
