Samsung SDI Signs New Agreement with GM to Develop Next-Gen Prismatic EV Batteries

Samsung SDI and General Motors (GM) have entered into a new agreement to jointly develop next-generation prismatic battery cells for future electric vehicle applications. The partnership will target batteries that combine high energy density with fast-charging performance, building on the companies’ existing relationship and their shared goal of accelerating vehicle electrification.

As part of the latest development, Samsung SDI has purchased GM’s 49.99% stake in SynergyCells, the joint venture battery plant currently being built in New Carlisle, Indiana. The transaction gives Samsung SDI full ownership of the facility, making it the company’s first wholly owned battery manufacturing site in North America.

The move reflects changing market conditions, including slower-than-expected EV adoption, while giving both companies greater flexibility to explore new forms of cooperation beyond the joint venture structure.

After construction is completed, Samsung SDI intends to initially use the Indiana facility to manufacture batteries for energy storage systems (ESS), a market that is seeing strong growth in the United States. Utilities, businesses, and residential customers are increasingly turning to energy storage to improve grid flexibility, support renewable energy integration, and provide reliable backup power.

By prioritizing ESS production at the New Carlisle plant, Samsung SDI expects to respond more quickly to rising demand in the U.S. market. The facility could also support the integration of the jointly developed prismatic battery technology with GM in the future, providing another potential path for collaboration.

A Samsung SDI spokesperson said that taking full ownership of the facility preserves the company’s strategic relationship with GM while allowing Samsung SDI to respond proactively to the rapidly expanding U.S. ESS market. The company also reiterated its commitment to electrification and continued cooperation with GM in battery technology development.

With full control of its Indiana manufacturing site and ongoing joint development efforts with GM, Samsung SDI is seeking to strengthen its production capabilities in North America. The strategy could help the company expand its role in both electric vehicle batteries and stationary energy storage as demand for electrification technologies continues to evolve.
