
As Europe’s energy transition gains momentum, PV-plus-storage systems are becoming a standard feature in large-scale solar plants. BloombergNEF forecasts that cumulative PV-plus-storage capacity in Europe will surpass 15 GWh by 2029. At the Sungrow PV & ESS Summit, Sungrow unveiled its Single-Platform Design for DC-Coupled PV-ESS Solutions. The integrated offering includes the 1+X modular inverter with a dedicated storage interface, the PowerTitan 3.0 with a built-in DC/DC module, and the PV-ESS Synergy Management System. Based on a unified platform design, the solution boosts operational efficiency, enables flexible energy dispatch, and improves grid compatibility for large-scale European solar projects.
Built on Sungrow’s Single-Platform PV-ESS architecture, the system supports discharge durations of up to 8 hours, a DC/AC ratio as high as 2.0, and ESS power utilization of 100%. By intelligently managing energy arbitrage between peak and off-peak pricing periods, it ensures a reliable 24/7 green power supply while optimizing system costs, energy conversion, and power regulation—strengthening overall project value.
The DC-coupled design eliminates the need for a separate Power Conversion System (PCS) and MV station (MVS) while significantly reducing AC cabling requirements, leading to considerable cost savings. In a typical 100 MW PV + 200 MWh storage project, this can reduce CAPEX by up to €1 million. Additionally, the solution improves overall energy conversion efficiency by 3–5%, enhancing long-term project economics.
Beyond hardware, the Single-Platform PV-ESS design optimizes performance from delivery through operation. The integrated structure simplifies installation and commissioning for faster grid connection. During operation, adaptive control software maintains peak performance under varying conditions, supported by Sungrow’s localized European service network and one-stop after-sales offering. These features ensure efficient, reliable management and maximize asset returns for Europe’s large-scale PV-plus-storage projects.
The system automatically stores surplus solar generation during peak production or grid curtailment periods. It charges rapidly when generation is high and electricity prices are low, and discharges steadily during peak demand. This smart regulation minimizes curtailment, stabilizes PV output, and delivers grid-friendly power—guaranteeing a steady around-the-clock energy supply.
Engineered for Europe’s increasingly complex and weak-grid scenarios, the solution features advanced grid-forming capabilities to maintain system and equipment stability under all grid conditions. It provides stronger, faster inertia support, cutting frequency response time from hundreds of milliseconds to under 5 ms for rapid grid stabilization and improved reliability.
With 1.8 times transient overvoltage tolerance and real-time monitoring of grid strength indicators such as Short-Circuit Ratio (SCR), the system smoothly switches between grid-following and grid-forming modes, ensuring reliable performance across weak to strong grid transitions.
To date, Sungrow’s Single-Platform DC-coupled PV-ESS system has been deployed in over 90 projects globally, including a 100 MW PV + 220 MWh ESS system in Australia and a 181 MW PV + 638 MWh ESS project in Chile—proving its reliability across diverse grid and market environments.
