Electric vehicles (EVs) are often considered a new thing, but some of the first cars built in the 19th century were electric. Since then, internal combustion engine (ICE) cars have exploded in popularity, and electric cars have been largely forgotten. Electric vehicles attracted attention during the oil crisis of the 1970s and when the California Air Resources Board (CARB) developed its zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) program in the 1990s, but they did not take hold.

Since then, the electric vehicle market has expanded steadily. From the perspective of charging methods, electric vehicles are mainly divided into two categories. The first are hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and mild hybrid vehicles (MHEV), which use ICE, regenerative braking and energy recovery to charge their own batteries. The second category is plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV), which are types that require "plug-in" charging. These vehicles require an on-board charger (OBC).

Compatible with single-phase or three-phase power supplies, the OBC delivers up to 22kW of power for the fastest charging speeds. Since all batteries require DC power for charging, the primary function of the OBC is to rectify the mains input and convert it to a suitable charging voltage for the battery (400V, or more recently 800V).
