Xiamen, China — December 12 — At its third annual Eco-Day, energy storage specialist HiTHIUM unveiled what it calls the world’s first natively designed 8-hour battery energy storage solution: the ∞Power8, rated at 6.9MW/55.2MWh. Built from the ground up for long-duration energy storage (LDES), the system features a dedicated 8-hour architecture and proprietary 8-hour battery cells. HiTHIUM presents it as the first solution truly conceived for 8-hour applications, with the goal of delivering continuous, all-weather renewable power.
As grid stability and renewable integration grow in importance, 8-hour LDES is becoming a key industry focus. Among LDES technologies, lithium-based systems are rising in prominence due to their compatibility, efficiency, and reliability. Positioning itself as a lithium LDES pioneer, HiTHIUM states that this new innovation is intended to enhance lithium’s cost competitiveness and speed up its large-scale adoption for long-duration uses.
The ∞Power8 is a turnkey solution configured for 8-hour, all-weather storage. Each standardized unit delivers 6.9MW/55.2MWh and combines one medium-voltage module with eight storage modules. According to HiTHIUM, optimized logistics and cabling reduce on-site construction work, increase deployment speed by 18%, and cut land use by 23% compared to earlier designs. The system comes pre-configured for standalone plants, large renewable bases, and extreme environments.
The native design is said to offer key benefits:
- Cost Reduction: By removing redundant components, system integration rises by over 10%, with efficiency improvements exceeding 30%.
- High-Efficiency Operation: Intelligent control, thermal management, and active balancing reduce auxiliary power consumption by over 30%, enhance temperature control precision by 50%, and boost response speed by 20%. Active balancing alone is estimated to save more than $1 million per GWh.
- Safety & Reliability: Features include mass-produced high-strength steel-belt confinement, a fast dual-valve pressure release design, and next-generation insulation materials tested to endure 800°C and 300 kPa. HiTHIUM claims it is the first globally to pass an open-door fire test.
At the core of the solution lies the ∞Cell 1300Ah, designed specifically for 8-hour applications. With more than four times the capacity of mainstream cells, it cuts system part counts by over 30%. HiTHIUM highlights multi-layer safety protection, stating the cell prevents thermal runaway propagation and offers a design life surpassing 25 years.
The cell’s high capacity comes from proprietary ultra-thick electrode technology, which tackles challenges such as electrode cracking and slow ion transport. Compared to 2-hour cells, it reduces foil and component costs by over 50%. HiTHIUM’s LDES cell portfolio now includes 587Ah, 1175Ah, and 1300Ah models, with the first two already shipping at GWh scale. Mass production of the ∞Power8 system is scheduled for Q4 2026.
The launch sets a new technical benchmark for LDES, aiming to push forward cost-effectiveness, safety, and performance. HiTHIUM indicates it will continue to innovate for applications in renewable bases and data centers, working toward making all-weather green power a worldwide standard.
