Saudi Arabia has begun construction on its inaugural wave of utility-scale battery energy storage projects. Gotion High-Tech has been awarded the central 6 GWh storage contract for the initiative, the battery maker said in a WeChat post. Under the deal, Gotion will supply full energy storage solutions across three major sites in the kingdom.

According to Gotion, the win marks its move into the Middle East’s premium energy storage segment. It also underscores how Chinese storage firms are increasingly taking part in the region’s energy transition, the company said. Energy storage systems in the Middle East must contend with punishing conditions: intense dryness, regular sandstorms and large day-night temperature shifts. The project is being developed under a BOO, or Build-Own-Operate, model, a structure that demands exceptional equipment reliability, durability and long-term performance.

Gotion said it created a project-specific integrated solution to meet those challenges. The offering is anchored by its Qianyuan Smart Energy Storage System, which the company calls a highly integrated platform featuring high capacity and a long cycle life. By combining modular design, accurate thermal control and smart battery management, the system is designed to operate steadily from -30℃ to 55℃. It also incorporates safeguards against heat, wind and sand, enhancing stability and reliability in severe environments.

When running, the project will capture surplus solar power produced during daylight hours and release it when demand peaks. Gotion said this will narrow the gap between renewable generation and electricity use, strengthen the Saudi grid’s capacity to integrate more renewables and improve its ability to respond nimbly as demand shifts.

Gotion said its international strategy is evolving past conventional manufacturing toward pairing Chinese technology with global services. The company added that it will keep growing in overseas new energy markets and partner with regional players to deliver storage technologies and integrated solutions that advance the global energy transition and low-carbon development.
