On November 20, Gotion held a ceremony in Hefei to celebrate the mass production and delivery of its standard battery cell—also known as the Unified Cell (UC). This milestone marks the full-scale production phase of the five-year strategic partnership between Volkswagen Group, its battery company PowerCo, and Gotion. From 2026 to 2032, Gotion will supply Volkswagen Group with high-performance LFP cells and other standard cell products.
The ceremony was attended by key figures including Thomas Schmall, Chief Technology Officer of Volkswagen Group; Frank Blome, CEO of PowerCo; Dr. Günther Mendl, Head of Volkswagen Group’s Center of Excellence for Batteries; Olaf Korzinovski, Executive Vice President of Volkswagen Group China; Li Zhen, Chairman of Gotion; Wang Qisui, Executive President; and Cai Yi, President of Europe and Africa Business.
On the morning of the 20th, the iron-lithium workshop at Gotion’s UC plant in Hefei welcomed core management teams from Volkswagen Group, Volkswagen China, PowerCo, and the Battery Center of Excellence. As guests inserted the standard cells into the activation device, the stopwatch began to accelerate—symbolizing the official start of mass production and delivery of the jointly developed Unified Cell.
Dr. Zhang Hongli, Gotion Board Member and Chairman of the Hefei Base, noted that batch deliveries of the UC have gradually started this year. “Five years of cooperation have enabled us to build a complete innovation system and an intelligent manufacturing ecosystem around the standard cell. The delivered cells meet internationally advanced levels in energy density, safety performance, and cost control, allowing for deeper collaboration across the entire chain—from technological synergy to production capacity alignment and market supply.”
Gotion is now working closely with multiple Volkswagen and PowerCo project teams to advance mass production and delivery. During the ceremony, Gotion also unveiled a battery pack system developed based on the unified cell platform. In addition to supplying standard cells, Gotion will gradually provide battery products to multiple Volkswagen Group vehicle platforms.
On the same day, Thomas Schmall and other executives visited the standard cell production line, accompanied by Chairman Li Zhen. From forming their strategic partnership in 2020, receiving dual Volkswagen laboratory certifications in 2023, securing the overseas UC supply contract, earning the “Best Supplier” award in 2024, to jointly showcasing standard cells and battery packs at international exhibitions in 2025—Gotion and Volkswagen have continuously deepened their cooperation.
The standard Unified Cell is a highly compatible, standardized battery solution. A single cell format supports different chemistries and adapts to multiple vehicle platforms. Its advantages include integration efficiency, fast-charging performance, robust safety protection, and strong low-temperature capability, earning multiple designations from Volkswagen.
Volkswagen Group CTO Thomas Schmall stated: “Today, the collaboration among Volkswagen Group, Gotion, and PowerCo has entered a new stage. The Unified Cell is a global technology platform designed for nearly all Volkswagen brands and regional markets, enabling innovation and economies of scale. With Gotion’s LFP unified cells being produced in Hefei and PowerCo’s Salzgitter plant in Germany starting production of NCM unified cells this December, we are ready to provide next-generation, highly competitive battery technologies for all Volkswagen brands. This positions Gotion as a key pillar in our global ‘make-and-buy’ battery strategy.”
Olaf Korzinovski, Executive Vice President of Volkswagen Group (China), added: “Our partnership with Gotion and PowerCo began with a shared vision—to create high-quality, highly competitive batteries for the future of electric mobility. Today, that vision has become reality. Next, we will focus on ramping up production capacity and building a successful future together.”
Gotion Chairman Li Zhen expressed sincere gratitude to Volkswagen for their collaborative journey. He noted that the partnership is rooted in shared values and a unified vision, while Volkswagen’s strategic investment has accelerated Gotion’s global strategy. The official delivery of the standard cell signals a new stage of industrial synergy. Starting from mass production, Gotion will continue technological iteration to ensure the cells remain safe, reliable, and a model of cooperation—powering Volkswagen’s electric transformation.
