RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – HiTHIUM, a leading global manufacturer of stationary energy storage products, has been selected to supply two major battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in northern Saudi Arabia’s Tabuk and Hail provinces. Developed in collaboration with Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) and Alfanar Projects, the projects will have a combined capacity of 1GW/4GWh, making them among the largest energy storage deployments in the Middle East.
The landmark initiative will feature HiTHIUM’s industry-leading ∞Cell 1175Ah long-duration energy storage battery cells—the world’s first mass-produced battery cells on the thousand-amp-hour scale. These will be integrated into the company’s ∞Power 6.25MWh Desert Eagle containerized solutions, which are specifically engineered for Saudi Arabia’s extreme climate conditions, including high temperatures and frequent sandstorms.
The Desert Eagle series includes custom technical upgrades tailored to the harsh local environment, delivering three major performance improvements:
● Heat Resilience: A multi-layer insulation design lowers internal container temperatures by 8–10°C, ensuring stable operation across an extreme temperature range from -30°C to 60°C.
● Sandstorm Protection: Fully sealed critical components combined with intelligent dust monitoring systems significantly reduce maintenance needs.
● Extended Durability: Key components are rated for over 40,000 hours of continuous operation, ensuring long-term reliability.
The large-scale storage project will provide critical grid services such as load shifting, black start capability, frequency regulation, and voltage support. These functions are essential for enabling higher penetration of renewable energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels, aligning directly with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals for energy transition and diversification.
As the technology and service provider, HiTHIUM will be responsible for system design, equipment supply, installation supervision, and long-term maintenance. Alfanar Projects will lead local construction, with commissioning scheduled for 2026.
Dr. Keramat Fakhari, President of Middle East and Africa at HiTHIUM, highlighted the project’s importance: “This 4GWh benchmark project marks a major milestone in Saudi Arabia’s energy transition and underscores HiTHIUM’s competitive edge in scenario-customized solutions. By combining our long-duration storage technology with SEC’s forward-looking planning and Alfanar’s regional expertise, we are delivering stable and reliable power support to the local grid while pushing the boundaries of innovation for energy storage in extreme environments.”
This project represents the world’s first gigawatt-hour-scale application of mass-produced thousand-amp-hour-class battery cells and integrated system solutions, setting a new benchmark for the large-scale commercialization of long-duration energy storage technology.
Founded in 2019, HiTHIUM has quickly risen to become a top global BESS manufacturer, having delivered more than 20GWh of battery capacity to date. The company operates four R&D centers and multiple smart manufacturing facilities, with innovations including breakthroughs in safety and lifecycle performance of lithium-ion batteries.
The announcement follows HiTHIUM’s recent recognition as one of the top five global BESS manufacturers in 2023, reinforcing the company’s focused strategy on stationary energy storage.
