Production has started at LG Energy Solution’s new 226-acre battery manufacturing site in Lansing, Michigan, the company announced on August 18, 2026. The facility, known as LG Energy Solution Michigan-Lansing, is designed to serve both energy storage system and electric vehicle applications, and is expected to broaden Michigan’s manufacturing base as it reaches higher output levels.
The Lansing plant will turn out large-format lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells for energy storage systems. These cells will be assembled by LG Energy Solution Vertech, the company’s U.S. energy storage business, into complete systems for utility-scale, grid-scale, and other commercial and industrial uses. The site will also produce nickel-manganese-cobalt cells for Toyota, including batteries destined for the 2027 Toyota Highlander EV, which is to be built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in Georgetown, Kentucky.
At full capacity, the Lansing facility is projected to have annual battery production of more than 35 gigawatt-hours, according to LG Energy Solution. Employment currently stands at around 900 workers and is expected to grow to 1,700 once the plant reaches full output. Since 2022, the company has put more than $2 billion into the Lansing project.
The opening ceremony drew Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, U.S. Representative Tom Barrett, and Sangwoo Hong, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Chicago. LG Energy Solution said the new plant underscores its long-term commitment to Michigan, where it now runs facilities in Holland and Lansing, as well as a North American regional group and research and development center in Troy. The company’s total investment in Michigan has exceeded $5 billion since 2010.
LG Energy Solution also highlighted that growing electricity demand in the United States is driving greater need for energy storage. Batteries manufactured in Lansing are expected to enable more reliable electricity dispatch for utilities such as DTE Energy. By the end of 2026, the company plans to have more than 50 gigawatt-hours of LFP cell-making capacity across five facilities in North America, with 80% of its global energy storage capacity expected to be located in North America by year-end.
