Samsung SDI’s U.S. subsidiary, Samsung SDI America, has locked in a massive 1.5 trillion KRW (around $1 billion) contract to supply prismatic energy storage system (ESS) batteries to an American energy firm. The four-year deal runs from 2026 to 2029, with production slated for the StarPlus Energy facility in Indiana—a joint venture between Samsung SDI and automaker Stellantis. Shipments will kick off with nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) battery cells, later transitioning to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells as the project’s needs shift.

The agreement marks another leap in Samsung SDI’s growing North American ESS presence, a market heating up as renewable energy integration accelerates and AI-driven data centers boost demand. Hot on the heels of a separate 2 trillion KRW deal last December to supply LFP ESS cells to a major U.S. energy infrastructure player, this latest win cements the company’s reputation for technical muscle and top-tier safety standards—credentials already backed by a roster of high-profile customers.

Samsung SDI’s prismatic PrismStack technology stands out for its rugged build, advanced fire-safety features, and long-haul reliability, especially when stacked against pouch-type cells. Industry watchers also note that these victories could strengthen the company’s hand in South Korean government tenders for state-run power utility ESS projects. As North America’s sole major non-Chinese supplier of prismatic ESS batteries, Samsung SDI is already in talks with more global players and expects to seal additional agreements soon.
