Only one in seven charging posts in Europe is fast charging

Recently, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) released a report on the density of charger piles, which is significantly underrepresented in the road networks of most EU countries, and most of them do not support fast charging.

In the week before the European Parliament voted on the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), ACEA had reminded the framers of this twofold problem, as it could hinder the market acceptance of electric vehicles.

The data shows that six European countries have an average of less than one on board charger per 100 kilometers, 17 countries have an average of less than five charging station per 100 kilometers, and only five countries have an average of more than 10 charging posts per 100 kilometers.

There is a huge difference between countries with the most charging posts per 100 km and those with the least number of charging posts. In the Netherlands, there is one charger post for every 1.5 km of road, while Poland is eight times larger than the Netherlands, but has only one charging post for every 150 km.

Charging speed is also a major problem throughout Europe, with only one in seven of the charging posts in Europe being fast charging, and the rest being under 22 kW.

Many European countries have already announced the time to ban the sale of fuel cars, and the earliest country will implement a ban on fuel cars in 2025. In September this year, sales of electric vehicles in thirteen European countries totaled 224,900 units, up 9.9% year-on-year, with eight countries achieving year-on-year growth in sales. Electric vehicle sales will increase significantly in EU countries, but according to an ACEA European Automobile Manufacturers Association study, up to 6.8 million public charging stations will need to be built by 2030 to meet their demand.l In addition, the development of on board charger should also be encouraged.

The current average range of pure trams is 326 kilometers, which is sufficient for daily commuting or short trips, but to enable cross-border travel in Europe, the current ratios of charging stations are far from adequate, and Europe needs to upgrade its charging infrastructure.

Ernst & Young and the European Electricity Industry Alliance (Eurelectric) jointly released a report, the number of electric vehicles on Europe's roads in 2035 may reach 130 million, so the European region needs to develop a good policy response plan to deal with the charging pressure brought by the surge in the number of electric vehicles.

The director of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association mentioned in the report, "If we want to convince citizens across Europe to switch to electric vehicles in the next decade, charging these vehicles should be as easy as refueling them today, and people should not have to run for miles to find a charging post or wait for long periods of time to charge their vehicles.
