What You Need to Know About EV DC Fast Charger Costs

As electric vehicles (EVs) continue to become more popular, the demand for DC fast charging stations is increasing rapidly. Many auto dealers, fleet operators, commercial and industrial business owners, including hotels and retail malls, are choosing to install DC fast chargers, also known as Level 3 chargers, on-site. It was a prudent decision with many benefits involved. DC fast chargers offer greater convenience, a higher level of customer service, more benefits for employees and guests, and a commitment to reduce environmental impact. As an industry leader in EV charging solutions, one of the most common questions commercial customers ask us is: "How much does a DC fast charger cost and/or how much does it cost to install a DC fast charger?"

Similar to any construction project, there are many factors that affect the overall cost of a DC fast charger purchase and/or installation. The first things to consider are:

Charger Output Levels - DC fast chargers can have outputs ranging from 20kW to over 350kW, depending on the model and application they are aimed at.

These units can cost anywhere from about $15,000 to over $150,000 for the highest output unit.

Some chargers can service two vehicles at the same time, but others may require additional distributors or units to provide this convenience.

Existing Electrical Infrastructure - As the site owner, manager or operator, or the person responsible for obtaining DC fast chargers for your site, you need to consider your current electrical infrastructure. While DC fast chargers provide faster charging, they also require more energy. Most DC fast chargers require 480 V/3 phase to function properly.

There are some DC fast chargers that can operate on single phase or 208V/3 phase, but are limited to 50kW and below outputs.

If you are considering installing a high power DC fast charger, you may need 480V/3 phase over 500A.

If the utility needs to be involved in obtaining additional power for the site, it may increase the cost due to the large amount of time involved.

Location - The closer you are to the electrical infrastructure, the lower your installation costs. The further you are from the panel, the greater the chance that concrete or walls will need to be cut, which will increase the overall cost.

Rebates and Incentives - There are many programs available to site hosts that can help offset equipment costs, installation costs, or both. Please contact us for more information about programs you may be eligible for.
