Maxell, Ltd. has launched an all-solid-state battery power module designed to replicate the form factor and output performance of a lithium thionyl chloride (ER) battery. Measuring 17.9 mm in diameter and 50.0 mm in height, the module provides a nominal voltage of 3.6 V—the same as conventional ER cells widely employed in backup systems for industrial equipment, smart meters, and IoT sensors.
In contrast to single-use ER batteries, which must be replaced periodically, Maxell’s solution incorporates eight mass-produced “PSB401010H” all-solid-state cells connected in parallel, offering a capacity of about 35 mAh. An integrated charging circuit supports 5 V USB 2.0 Micro-B input and follows a 12-hour constant current/constant voltage charging routine. The module maintains reliable operation across an extensive temperature range, from –20 °C to +125 °C while charging and –40 °C to +125 °C during discharge.
By providing a rechargeable drop-in alternative to ER batteries, Maxell seeks to cut maintenance frequency and downtime in industrial settings, thereby extending equipment uptime. The reusable design also helps reduce the disposal of primary cells, supporting environmental sustainability through decreased battery waste.
Maxell remains committed to advancing all-solid-state battery technology across four core areas: high reliability, thermal resistance, high output, and greater capacity. Simultaneously, the company is creating next-generation modules that integrate solid-state cells with wireless power transfer and energy harvesting systems. These initiatives align with Maxell’s wider strategy to tackle societal needs, broaden the use of solid-state batteries in environments unsuitable for conventional chemistries, and promote a sustainable energy future.
